Filipinos all over the world are known for their ingenuity. It is unarguably evident from the talents they showcase everyday on social media. Take for example Julius Ceasar Apellado, the netizen who recently went viral because of his resourcefulness and creativity in creating an art piece focusing on the Philippine flag. Something unique about his artwork was that he opted to use thousands of matchsticks to visualize the giant flag.
In an interview with GMA, Julius Ceasar Apellado revealed that he used 19,680 matchsticks in order to complete his one of a kind masterpiece. He explained further by saying that he painstakingly colored each match for its place in the image then glued it into place to fulfill the distinct features of the national flag.
Moreover, he shared in the interview that he has been creating artwork out of simple and cheap materials. He was quoted saying:
“Mahirap gawin pero maganda ang kakalabasan kahit ordinary art lang”.
With the overflowing number of commendations he’s receiving for his masterpiece, Julius Ceasar Apellado said that he wants to exhibit his artwork to allow the public to truly appreciate his artwork firsthand.
“Gusto ko sana ipakita sa exhibit at pagkatapos ay i-display lang sa bahay ko”
He recounted that way back in 2017, he was already coming up with the concept to do a unique work of art depicting the Philippine flag.
“Dating 2017 nag-isip ako ng kakaiba, eh pumasok sa isipan ko yung posporo kaya pinagaralan ko muna at pinagisipan kasi madaming palito ang magagastos ko, kaya ngayon ko lang nagawa pagdating ng 2018.”
Many netizens could not help but point out that Apellado’s matchstick art could be a fire hazard. So, the artist replied by saying “Lalagyan ko ng salamin o frame.”
He also shared that he spent more than P1,600 for the materials to create the intricate Philippine flag. Now, he is thinking about what he is going to do with the 41 empty boxes of matchsticks that he used on this project.
Photos of Apellado’s artwork was shared on the Facebook page GUHIT Pinas which gained positive reactions and thousands of shares and comments from the netizens.
